One of Hilton Head Island's Oldest Live Oak Trees

Next to the Hilton Head Island lighthouse stands one of Hilton Head Island's oldest Live Oak trees. A live oak is a large sprawling, picturesque tree, usually graced with Spanish moss and strongly reminiscent of the Old South. Live Oak is on the broadest spreading Oaks, providing large areas of deep, inviting shade.

The Live Oak stands close to the Leamington Lighthouse and provides a backdrop for the 15th Green of the Arthur Hills Golf Course. An asphalt cart path and two small structures are below or close to the canopy of the tree.

The tree is approximately seventy feet (70’) tall and has a canopy spread of approximately one fifty feet (150’) at its widest spread.

The diameter of the trees was measured using a forester’s diameter tape to be one hundred nine inches (109”) which is nine feet one inch (9’1”). Using industry calculations this would make the tree to be 425 to 450 years old.
